Sedation Dentistry

Sedation dentistry involves the use of medicine to reduce anxiety or pain during dental treatments. Undiagnosed dental issues lead to more complicated issues hence avoiding the dentist due to perpetual fear can be eased by using Sedation Dentistry.

But not visiting the dentist can lead to severe oral health problems and even affect your overall health. This is why, at our Advanced Dentistry of Plymouth Meeting dental practice, we offer sedation dentistry services.

Why Sedation

Feel at ease: The treatment area is numbed so that the patient is at ease and does not feel pain.

Alleviate fear: Sedation helps the patient to alleviate fear resulting in frequent dental checks ups thereby maintaining good oral health.

Types of Sedation

Sedatives can be administered before or during dental procedures. Sedation may involve gases that are inhaled, pills that are taken, or medicine that is injected.

Nitrous Oxide (laughing gas)

Usually used for younger patients and for those who wish to drive themselves home after their appointments, inhaled sedation is taken in by a mask to the nose. This nitrous oxide is dentist controlled and wears off quickly after the introduction of oxygen when your appointment is concluded. Some patients fall asleep with just this method, while others are drowsy and do not remember much of their procedure.

IV Sedation

For patients who want faster-acting sedation medication, this method may be recommended. The sedative is administered through the vein, creates a deeper sense of relaxation, and is recommended for wisdom teeth extraction or need implants placement. IV sedation is often chosen for its ability to create a greater amnesiac effect; patients are unaware that the procedure is being performed.
